Product Introduction

Inserting Nasopharyngeal Airway Introduction

Disposable nasopharyngeal airway is used in general anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine for airway management and mechanical ventilation. The tube is inserted into a patient's nose in order to ensure that the airway is not closed off and that air is able to reach the lungs.

DESCRIPTION

  • Soft, flexible anatomically designed airway adjunct
  • Sized by measuring from the tip of the patient's nose to the earlobe
  • described by internal diameter in mm (range from 3.0–9.0 mm)
  • commonly 6–7 mm in an adult female and 7–8 mm for an adult male

METHOD OF INSERTION/ USE

  1. Before use, please select a nasopharyngeal airway of appropriate size.
  2. Remove nasopharyngeal airway from the package and check whether the instrument is in good condition.
  3. The curve of the nasopharyngeal airway is inserted into the nasal cavity facing the hard palate and pushed downward along the plane of the jaw to the hard palate until resistance is encountered on the posterior wall of the nasopharynx.
  4. After the nasopharyngeal airway has been inserted to sufficient depth, move it back 1 to 2cm if client coughs or resists. If the respiratory obstruction is still present, move down to find the optimal position of the front end in the pharynx with an aerosol effect, or try to insert another longer nasopharyngeal airway.
  5. Then fix the nasopharyngeal airway distally to the alar of the nose.

RFQ

Q: When should a nasopharyngeal airway not be used?

A: Like other nasal tubes, use of nasal airways increases the risk of sinusitis; therefore, contraindications to their use include severe coagulopathy, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, and basilar skull fractures

Q: When would you use a nasopharyngeal airway instead of a oropharyngeal airway?

A: Use an oropharyngeal airway only if the patient is unconscious or minimally responsive because it may stimulate gagging, which poses a risk of aspiration. Nasopharyngeal airways are preferred for obtunded patients with intact gag reflexes.

Q: Who can get a nasopharyngeal airway?

A: NPA's maintain airway patency in patients who are conscious or semi-conscious, they can be used in neonates to adults.
