Critical care-closed suction tube

Artificial airway placement is an invasive operation. After tracheal intubation, the epiglottis function will be affected. Sputum accumulation in the airway is easy to breed bacteria, which may cause lung infection and hinder the treatment of primary diseases.

Sputum suction is a necessary nursing operation to keep the artificial airway unobstructed and ensure normal breathing.

At present, patients on ventilator support mainly use two sputum suction methods: open suction and closed suction.

Open suction needs to disconnect the ventilator first, then put the suction catheter into the airway through the mouth, nose or artificial tube for sputum removal. It is simple and easy to use, so it is widely used in clinics.

But during operation, ventilation cannot be kept stable. It may lead to unstable breathing and heart rate, hypoxia, mucosal injury and cross infection, which will slow down patient recovery and extend ventilation time.

Different from open type, closed suction does not need to disconnect the ventilator.

With a fully closed structure, it can work with negative pressure suction device and oxygen supply equipment to realize continuous oxygen supply. It is easy to operate and greatly reduces the infection risk.

In actual use, the closed suction catheter can be used every hour and replaced every 24 hours.

When suctioning, hold the rotating connector with one hand, push the catheter 2–3 cm into the artificial airway, press the control button to start suction, and slowly pull back the catheter until the black marking line appears.

Compared with open suction, closed suction can avoid external pollution and cross infection, and keep the ventilator working continuously. It can effectively reduce the occurrence of ventilator-related pneumonia and bring safer care to patients.
